I often see parents come into the clinic with their sick child who has a fever. When I ask them what their child’s temperature is and how they took it I get many different answers. Some parents say they don’t have a thermometer or it broke and their child feels warm.
Other parents will use a digital thermometer under the arm of an infant, or an ear thermometer that is not accurate because it’s too old and is registering a fever for healthy family members.
It is important to take a temperature properly. It helps the practitioner with a diagnosis, especially if a fever has changed.
